This presentation will discuss hate crimes and discrimination in the United States since September 11th, 2001.  In spite of efforts by public officials to contain a wave of hate crimes after September 11th, anti-Muslim hate crimes in the United States rose 1700 percent during 2001.

 

Biographical Information

Manpreet Singh Dhanhjal is a Staff Attorney with the Refugee and Immigrant Program at Minnesota Advocates for Human Rights.  Mr. Dhanjal received his undergraduate degree from Rutgers University.  Prior to law school, Mr. Dhanjal worked as a Legislative Correspondent for Representative Ellen O. Tauscher in the House of Representatives.  He is recognized as the first Sikh American to be employed as a full-time staff member on Capitol Hill.  Mr. Dhanjal received his law degree from Villanova University School of Law.  Following graduation, Mr. Dhanjal served as a Judicial Law Clerk in the Superior Court of New Jersey ~ Criminal Part.  Mr. Dhanjal is licensed to practice law in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, the U.S. District Court for the State of New Jersey, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit.  He is a founding member of the Sikh Bar Association and a volunteer attorney with the Sikh Mediawatch and Resource Taskforce (S.M.A.R.T.).  Mr. Dhanjal has lectured nationally on the issue of Racial Profiling and conducted Bias Awareness Training for Law Enforcement Personnel.  He currently serves on the Board of Advisors to the Minority Alumni Society of the Villanova Law Alumni Association.
