This presentation will cover issues related to capital punishment and human rights in the Iraqi context.   Under the government of Saddam Hussein, the death penalty was used frequently.  Following the US invasion, the death penalty was suspended, but the punishment was reinstated in 2004.  Our speaker will discuss the who, how, where, when and why of the death penalty in Iraq.  The presenter will also provide insight into Iraqis' perception of the death penalty before and after the US invasion.  Finally, the presenter will discuss the human rights issues raised by use of the death penalty in the Iraqi context, including the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq's perspective towards death penalty, in light of the Canal Hotel bombing in August 2003.

This lecture is a brown bag lunch.  Beverages will be provided.
