As the debate over immigration reform heats up, we are presented with the opportunity to create positive changes in our immigration system. A variety of proposed legislation seeks to satisfy the need for national security by enhancing immigration enforcement but does not promote long-term solutions that balance the diverse needs of our nation and the immigrants living within its borders. This lecture will offer an overview of current state and national legislative proposals and a human rights-based framework for understanding this complex issue.
